What is Green?

Green is defined as initiatives that reduce the impact on human health and the natural environment.  Green includes global climate change and broader environmental initiatives.  When a company goes green, it is reducing its impact by embedding green initiatives into its business practices, often with a positive economic and reputational impact.

Why Should the Sports Industry Go Green?

Efficiency improvements / Cost savings

  • Adopting practices that save energy, save water, or reduce waste also may save money

Image enhancement

  • Athletes already are accepted as role models, and taking positive environmental actions further enhances that public image
  • Green initiatives can be an integral part of public relations campaigns and they can enhance relationships with sponsors

Community relations

  • Highly successful sports entities nurture special relationships not only with their fans but also with their local communities
  • Many green initiatives are generally seen as characteristics of solid corporate citizenship

Market differentiation

  • Sports teams' green initiatives have been recognized in the media (e.g., Fast Company, Sports Business Journal)

Join the national movement

  • Participating in the green movement supports our nation’s current focus
  • Besides demonstrating good citizenship, sports entities also may tap into Federal and state programs that encourage green initiatives
